Farming today is just as tough and unpredictable today as it was at nearly any other point in history. The success or failure of a crop is not entirely in the farmer's hands. Today's weather offers many uncertainties. As if that isn't enough, the price volatility of grains can also make or break a season.
Stemming all the way back to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930's Multi Peril Crop Insurance can assist farmers to guarantee a certain level of production or revenue in years when the weather or markets make it difficult for farmers. A MPCI policy provides a peace of mind to farmers.
Some of the typical policies producers select are geared towards:
Yield Protection: This polciy will provide protection for declines in a producers yields due to unavoidable natural disasters such as drought, excessive moisture, hail, wind, frost, insects, and disease. Based on a producers actual production history (APH), a percentage of that APH can be guaranteed. If the harvested plus any appraised production is less than the yield insured (generally 50-85 percent of a producers APH), the producer is paid an indemnity based on the difference.
Revenue Protection: this policy can insure a certain level of production (generally 50-85 percent of a producers APH) or a certain price level based on the the greater of the projected price or the harvest price. If the harvested plus any appraised production multiplied by the harvest price is less than the amount of insurance protection, the producer is paid an indemnity based on the difference.
